Where is FFF's Fourth F?

Where is FFF’s Fourth F?
by Elaiza Padon Padilla

WARNING: Be careful with Dr. Flordeliza Fernandez Francisco (popularly known as FFF). Your grade might be the fourth F.
Dr. Francisco is a legendary professor in Ateneo de Manila University where she also took her undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science and her Doctoral degree in Mathematics. She finished her undergraduate degree as a scholar of the Ateneo College Community (like her three other sisters who also happen to be Ateneo scholars, two of those are Math teachers as well) and her Doctoral degree as a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar. For two years, she had worked in Nanyang Institute of Technology, Singapore where she taught Singaporean Math teachers after which she returned back in the Philippines to teach in Ateneo.
In ProjectBlue, though, a website where Ateneans comment and evaluate their professors, FFF’s reviews are flooded with “the hidden treasure in Ateneo de Manila University – the fourth F of Dr. FFF – can be found… in her students’ report cards.” Students’ assessment of FFF are swamped with “trust me, extremely hard exams,” “brutal grading system,” and “let me experience an F (failing mark; letter grade when score is below 50% of the total items) in Math long tests.”
It can be construed that most of the students consider her long tests as “hard as hell” and yet, it is ironic that she still got most of the students’ recommendations. More than 80% of the Ateneans who wrote her evaluations recommended her to other students despite her “slaying long tests.” Why is this so? Is she that lovable that the risk of failing a Math subject worths it? What makes her loved by her students?
Dr. FFF is like the final answer in a Math problem – written in simplest form
Firstly, most of the students love her simplicity and her routine before starting a class, as reflected by the reviews in Project Blue. First, she will erase the board meticulously and then she will ask one of her students to lead the prayer. She then gives the class some overview of the activities for the week. She starts the lesson and lets the class work on some Math problems, giving them reasonable amount of time to get the hang of them. As she waits for them patiently, she wanders around the room looking at how students solve the problem, making sure that no one gets left behind. Smiles. Give hints and explains. However, if you think classes are so predictable, behold! When she gives surprise quizzes, it is really surprising! And every time, she has new things in mind to share. I can say it with such certainty because she had also been my teacher.
On one hand, every time you got confused with a question, all you got to do is to raise your hand and then she will walk towards your seat and enlighten your mind. She also gives out tips on how to study Math effectively during consultation hours.
Even Blue Ateneans love a genuine Grin
Secondly, no one hates people with positive aura and a genuine smile on the face. “Dr. Flor is really one of the best profs in Math, when one of her students tells her that he is having some difficulty with a particular lesson, she grins. After that big, awesome smile, she will be more than willing to show you the lesson works,” says Ephraim Josh Pangilinan (BS MA).
Dr. FFF smiles every time. She smiles when her students understand the lesson. She smiles in front of students bombarded with Mathematical equations. It is her unique smile that calms and tells her students, “It is going to be okay. It’s as easy as one, two, three….” – the reason why she is dubbed as the The Great Grinner and Dr. Smiley Face.
Fun and honour worth the risk
As for Alawi Sularte (BS AMF), “Yes, her class demands high order of intelligence in Math. And though your grade is at stake, the risk is worth it because you will really learn, appreciate and enjoy Mathematics as never before.”

As for students, the fun of learning and the inexplicable joy of understanding Math, really worth the risk. Also, there is a perceived honour in having her, a dubbed terror prof, as your prof. As the saying goes, if it's worth the risk, take the fall; if it's what you want, then it's worth it all.
Everyone loves to chill every once in a while
Dr. FFF is also known for her stress-relieving activities after her draining long tests – puzzles, movies, manipulative problems and cool Math toys to name some.
As said by some Ateneans, one of the reasons why FFF is loved by her students is that “She is always willing to assist you. She photocopies sample long tests for you and brings all sorts of astounding Math toys in class.” (Project Blue review)
A teacher and mother to Ateneans
“Dr. FFF’s high Math intelligence and her motherly attributes are one of the most powerful forces that move and inspire me to study even more and eventually be a Math wizard,” says John Carlo Cabug (BS MA).
Also, according to Trixie Tuparan (BS MA), her passion in educating her students is so evident in the way she acts as a professor – excellent teacher of the subject matter and motherly in every aspect.
Aside from her high mathematical intelligence, almost all of the students noted her motherly aspects that drive them inspired to study Math even more.
These five strong qualities of Dr. FFF keep the students from loving her even more.

As for the source of the Three F’s
Moving to the perspective of Dr. FFF, asked if she knows that some of students regard her as a terror professor, “Well, labelling a professor as a terror one is based on how students define terror professors. It’s purely subjective. For some, it means that the professor is short-tempered and unapproachable, which I believe I’m not. (Laughs). While for others, it means giving hard exams. But then again, the level of difficulty of a test varies for each student. Ergo, labelling professors as terrors is purely based on individual students.”
In terms of her hard long tests, she replied, “Well, if you think it’s hard, it will really be. Just as how when we are told or if we tell ourselves enough times that we are not good enough at a subject or sport, we are likely to believe it. And once we consider that belief, we tend to look for ways it is true, turning that belief into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Psychology-thing. (Smiles). That’s why I repeatedly tell my students who seek my advice on Math, “You will eventually be good in Math if you study hard. But the speed of getting into becoming a Math Whiz will accelerate if you first believe you are good at it.”
The truth finally revealed…
Some Mathematical problems are still in the process of solving. Some took thousands of years to finally be solved. But this one wonder of Math – of where on earth the fourth F is, is finally solved. And just as how Mathematical proofs end, conclusions are made. Truths are revealed.

The truth is, the WARNING made by some witty and punny Ateneans is a hoax – a false alarm that is. For the hidden treasure in Ateneo, the fourth F of Dr. FFF, is not really on our report cards (atleast not that F). It is actually in our hearts. That F that motivates and inspires us to push through with Math. The F that gives us hope to be Math Wizards, the F that keeps us strongly driven towards our dreams. Ah, yes! That F – the fourth F – Faith.

Age Doesn't Matter

Age Doesn’t Matter
by Juan Pawlo De Jesus
When it comes to age lifestyle of people vary, when people were young they would just play with friends, run around and not know of the different hardships in life but as they grow older their lifestyle changes adapting to their recent hobbies, requirements, or jobs. Our lifestyle affects our health as we grow and that our present lifestyle affects our next lifestyle adapting to where our body can withstand the environment or daily activities.
Cristobal Carcellar the seventy-six year old senior citizen is as active as ever as compared to other senior citizens in their area. At his age Cristobal can still drive to long distance places like from Manila to
Pangasinan which comprises of a 3 hour travel if you are travelling at a rate of 60 km/hr. While driving his keen sense of adrenaline is still as active as ever making his decisions in driving one of the best. He serves at his local parish church as a Lay Minister, the parish is located in Shelito Homes along Zabarte road in Quezon City. Every Sunday is his church service, a Lay Minister refers to Roman Catholics who have an official or semi-official function in the Church but who have not received Holy Orders not professed religous vows. By being in a senior citizen organization, he was able to accomplish a lot of tasks and was able to help out many senior citizens. With all these tasks at hand, he is still able to be a loving husband to his wide Editha Carcellar, a wonderful dad t this six children and a great grandfather to his 14 grandchildren. How did Cristobal achieve a wonderful and energetic lifestyle of his? Let us see his lifestyle before

Cristobal Carcellar as a child had 7 other siblings being the second oldest child responsibilities came upon him at an early age. His father Bienvenido Carcellar and his mother Conchita Carcellar are both government
employees making their salary not enough to support the whole family. So Cristobal Carcellar started to take responsibility. During his elementary years he as a child became a newspaper boy around their hometown. He used to deliver newspapers to different house in their hometown. When newspapers started to grow old in house and that people no longer wanted the old newspaper, Cristobal Carcellar would collect the old newspapers and sell the newspapers he collected, and the money he collected was used help his family. Cristobal Carcellar was doing this for roughly about 5 years. A lot of responsibility for a child in elementary. Lifestyle of Cristobal is being active as a child and selling newspapers which can help his family.

Life as a high school student is hard but that didn’t stop Cristobal Carcellar from continuing his studies while helping his parents. Due to being workaholics, the parents of Cristobal lately arrives home making other things to be done not accomplished like going to the wet market “ Palengke”, taking care of children and etc. It was up to Cristobal to take the responsibility because of the coincidence that the market is along the walkway going to and from Cristobal’s High School, he is the one going to Palengke to buy food, and as he arrives home he takes care of his younger siblings until their parents arrive. Fortunately for Cristobal he was able to surpass all the hardships and trials during the 4 years of his high school. Cristobal’s lifestyle during his secondary education is going to the market to buy food and take care of his younger siblings while studying.

As the next stage of his life approaches which is college, how will Cristobal get through the succeeding
challenges that will come his way? During his college year the money his parents earn is not enough for his tuition, so Cristobal being already legal tried to look for a government job just enough so that he could pay for his tuition. Cristobal was a working student in the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus. Through the trials of studying while working his faith in god never change, he relied on god for his strength to keep moving forward. He graduated as a Chemical Engineer. So Cristobal’s lifestyle during his college life was studying while having a part time job so that he could finance his studies, his projects, and his books.

These are the experiences and events Cristobal went through that made him the person he is now. The experiences he went thru just to achieve this wonderful lifestyle of his made him an active senior citizen, a member of senior citizen’s organization with position, a lay minister in their parish,
a loving husband, a great dad and a wonderful grandfather. Having gone thru different lifestyles during his younger years he was able to find the right lifestyle for him as he grew older.

Run for a Cause

Run for a Cause
by John Paul Mandap

The first marathon run dated back 490 B.C. and was participated in by Pheidippides, a Greek messenger.  The run started from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, Greece to announce that the Persians have lost the battle at Marathon.  Pheidippides sadly died after running straight without resting or stopping even once.  On 1896, several hundreds of years after the run of Pheidippides, the first official marathon run was held by the first modern Olympic games in Athens, Greece with a distance of a whopping 40,000 meters.  Coincidentally, the winner, Spiridon Louis, is a Greek too.

Since then, many runners have tried running a marathon.  Many have failed, but there also many who have succeeded in finishing the marathon.  Not only physical strength is required to finish a marathon but also pure heart and complete determination.  One should not forget that he/she joined a marathon run to finish it.  One can just give up in the middle of the marathon.  Believe it or not, some even give up because of boredom in the middle of the marathon run.

I know that finishing a complete marathon run is very hard but at the same time really exciting.  Maybe this is the reason why many love to run.  Currently, I don’t have the strength or the capability to finish a marathon so I joined a fun run named TakBOx: Trance 2013.

I have hit two birds in one stone when I learned the objective of TakBOx: Trance 2013.  The fun run wasn’t just a normal event, it was a fundraising event whose proceeds will be given to Culiat Elementary School to help them build their laboratories in order to help the students.  So, I am going to make my first run and help the students of Culiat Elementary school when I joined TakBOx: Trance 2013.

I woke up very early on December 8, 2013 which was the day of the event.  I must admit that I was excited to experience the feeling of a first-time runner.  I got to Ateneo de Manila University before five a.m. and went to the venue of  the start of the race.  There I saw the registration booth very alive even though it was very early in the morning.  I then got my racing bib and saw other runners warming up before their race started.

I had no idea that I would need to wait quite a long time before the five kilometer run starts.  The 16 kilometer run started at six a.m., the ten kilometer run started at almost 6:30 a.m., the five kilometer run started at almost seven a.m., and the three kilometer run started at almost 7:30 a.m.  I got a little frustrated because I waited for almost two hours before my race started.

Five minutes before I started running, I got a little excited so I asked one of the runners named Zayed Tan, a BS Life Science student, on why he joined TakBOx: Trance 2013.  He said that he wanted to help the students of Culiat Elementary School.  He also said that his run was also going to be his first run.

When the gun fired, I immediately started running.  I was surprised on how fast the other runners but I didn’t mind them afterwards.  I was only concentrated on finishing my five-kilometer run.  I ran the first two without resting and getting tired that much so I thought I did pretty well.  In the middle of my run, there were two “transformation” booths that we, the runners, are faced with a challenge that we need to complete.  Failing to do so will result to a penalty.  The challenge we faced on the first booth was to jump on the holes of several rubber tires.  The second challenge was a mini maze.  After running more or less two kilometers, I started to get tired so I walked.  I also noticed some of the runners also walked.  While I was running, I saw a marshall, Joshua Punzalan, who is also coincidentally my classmate.  He said “kaya mo yan!”, “You can do This!” in english, when he saw me.  Well, he gave me some strength to be able to run more.

After the race, everyone was surely very tired waiting for the awarding ceremony and for the announcement of the raffle winners.  Those who were in the five-kilometer and in the three-kilometer were entitled to win a 5,000 Php gift certificate for Gold’s Gym.  Those who were in the ten-kilometer and 16-kilometer race were entitled to win a ticket for two to any destination on the Philippines by Air Asia.  The lucky winner of the tickets had a racing bib number 277.

During freshman year in Ateneo, we are taught that each one of us should be a “man for others.”  It is really easy say and teach what it is like being a “man for others” is like, but when we think about it, it is not as easy as it seems to do.  So when I joined TakBox: Trance 2013, I was glad to see many Ateneans so that they can help Culiat Elementary School develop.  I can see that these these Ateneans are trying to do their best to be a “man for others.”  Zayed Tan even said that he also joined TakBox: Trance 2013 to help Culiat Elementary School even though he was not that ready to run.

It is really nice seeing others help but running  for five kilometers made me exhausted making me realize that I have underestimated running.  But still, running in this event was still a pretty good experience to me and I am looking forward to my next run.  I really hope that the proceeds of TakBOx: Trance 2013 will really go to the development of Culiat Elementary School.

360-Degree View

360-Degree View
by John Benedict N. Du

As we were looking for a place for our family reunion, we came across a resort while roaming the city of Gensan. We got curious so we decided to explore it. We were then welcomed and the people allowed us to explore the resort to our hearts’ content with a golf cart. It was then we realized that in the city of General Santos lies a wonderful and relaxing place called Mt. Sabrina Mountain View Resort.
This wonderful place started out as a rest house of Mr. Soledad ‘Sol’ Mananquil which he gradually opened to the public. It took a year to construct the hotel and its famous tuna-shaped swimming pool which is open from 6am to 10 pm. The resort consists of 25 rooms and a function hall where the 2nd reception of Shamsey Supsup and the prayer meeting of Manny Pacquiao were held. This resort also has an outdoor Jacuzzi, in-house food catering, city tour packages and laundry services. This resort is famous for its 360-degree panoramic view of General Santos City and is duly maintained by 40 people.

After exploring the resort, we then went to its restaurant and ordered their best-sellers. Some of them are tuna kare-kare and tuna belly but the one that amazes me most is the big eye tuna head paksiw.
The eye is even bigger than a cup of rice. It is a good thing that we ate during Christmas because we got discounts. Unfortunately, all rooms were fully booked when we arrived because of the holidays. When we went to check out the rooms, we were then greeted by employees who wore cowboy hats and plaid shirts. The rooms offered air conditioning, hot and cold shower, refrigerator with a mini bar, a flat screen TV with cable and free wifi access. We then learned that the resort has a ranch theme because of its horses and its future plans of building a horse-back riding arena. Other future plans include a wave pool, zip lines, an ATV track, and a golf course.
According to Mr. Mark Banglaw, manager of Mt. Sabrina Mountain View Resort, you can see the whole of General Santos City from Sarangani Bay all the way to Mt. Matutum.
The resort is also proud of its head chef, Jefferson Bryan Mananquil who is the grandson of Mr. Sol Mananquil. He graduated in Australia acquiring the “Certificat de Chef de Partie”. During the weekends, the resort is full of guests and they usually go there for gatherings and for relaxation.

According to one of the customers, Jessica Yabut, she found out about it when her family had lunch there. She thought it was “an okay place” because she likes mountains but it was hot since it was an afternoon. She also liked the ranch-theme of the resort and the food is very satisfying and good. She also said that the service is fast.

Given with what the resort currently offers, Mt Sabrina Mountain View Resort seems to be a decent place but has much to improve on, compared to others, especially resorts that have been around longer and have more noteworthy amenities. However, with future plans such as a wave pool, zip lines, an ATV track, and a golf course, they are off to a good start and were able to serve its purpose for people in Gensan to celebrate special occasions. It has the relaxing atmosphere, hotels, pools, golf carts, and a flavourful selection of food everything you need to relax and to keep you entertained. It is a very competitive resort and it is always improving. I look forward to future additions especially the zip line and the wave pool. It’s a shame that I only visited there once last Christmas but I will always look forward to my next visit as soon as I finish my homework.

A Healthy Lifestyle

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
by Kathleen Therese A. Nunez

Everyone is very conscious about how they look, especially the youth. Nowadays, you see a lot of teenagers in the gym. They spend most of their time in the gym and it seems that they consider it as their second home. Inside the Ateneo campus, you will see a lot of students exercising before or after school hours. Some are in the high school court playing volleyball, basketball, or futsal. Others are in Moro Lorenzo
gym to lift weights and jog around the oval. You won’t only see the athletes trying be fit for their sport but also the ordinary students here in Ateneo. So why are there a lot of youths spending so much time in the gym? Are they conscious about their looks and health? Or they just want to relax and get away from stress?
Research shows that physical activity boosts our energy, self-esteem, sleep quality, mood, and it reduces the risk of many chronic diseases, depression, and stress. Exercising is very effective at improving alertness and concentration, reducing fatigues, and enhancing overall cognitive function. It is also considered vital for maintaining mental fitness. It can be very helpful when stress has depleted your energy or ability to concentrate. If your body feels better, so does you mind. A workout of low to moderate intensity makes you feel energized and healthy. Regular perspiration has shown to elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, improve self-esteem, and decrease overall levels of tension.  Exercising is essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life until you grow old. Scientific evidence shows that being physically active can lead to a healthier and even happier life.
A lot of students go to a fitness gym to workout like Fitness First, Elorde Gym, and Golds Gym. But did you know that there’s a more convenient gym? You don’t have to go out of the campus to use the treadmill, lift weights, or do aerobic exercises. The Moro Lorenzo Sports Complex has excellent facilities such as a fully air-conditioned sports medicine clinic, indoor track oval, a weights room, indoor badminton and volleyball court, and indoor basketball court where the basketball teams hold practices. The sports complex is named after Luis Francisco “Moro” Lorenzo, who was one of the school’s successful basketball players.
As a part of the basketball team, we get to practice in Moro gym. We get to use the facilities like the weights room, the basketball court, and the sports medicine clinic. I was able to talk to my friend, Isay Sabio She’s an athlete, football player and a rookie. I asked Isay if she knows about the Moro Lorenzo gym. “We practice sa football field beside moro and if may injured sa team, we go sa clinic para magpatherapy.” They don’t use the Moro gym a lot because they don’t usually lift weights or jog around the oval. A coach of mine also a trainer in the gym said that she sees a lot of students using their facilities. Coach Marix said that she’s happy about the students who take time to exercise. For her, it’s a very healthy way of living.
I see how important being fit and healthy is. For athletes, it makes us cope up with what our sports ask from us. For the ones who are not athletes, I suggest that you start being active. It helps a lot especially with self-esteem and confidence. It can also be a way for you to relax and be energized. You don’t have to go out of the campus because Moro Lorenzo is open for all. So I’m inviting everyone to check out Moro Lorenzo. Start being healthy today so you can live a happy and active life!

The Men at GQ Magazines IRL (In Real Life)

The Men at GQ Magazines IRL(In Real Life)

When you check out Instagram or Tumblr, you’d find out quickly about the popular acronym that has taken the fashion blogs or social media by storm over vanity - #OOTD. It means Outfit Of The Day where people show others what they are wearing or have worn. Going through all those photos, you’d see many people showing off the branded and stylish clothes they have in their closet as they show off their “skill” in putting together pieces of fashionable outfits to make guys or girls stop and take a look at you. In these modern times, not only women are the ones who can be considered fashionable on the internet but also the men of the metropolitan world.

The younger men of the metropolis have become so engrossed of their appearances that they have taken more time to groom themselves in front of the mirror more than women as you would see in the amount of vain pictures of themselves or the Outfit Of The Day that these men have posted in their Instagrams or Tumblr. This type of man has been called a ‘Metrosexual’, which is a term that is derived from the words metropolitan and heterosexual, that was coined back in 1994. We define a metrosexual man to be so concerned of his appearance that he spends a significant amount of time shopping and grooming. They have adopted fashions and lifestyles stereotypically associated with homosexuals.

Back in the ‘80s, the metrosexual man could only be found inside fashion magazines such as GQ or
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/428827195739739766/
in television advertisements for Abercrombie & Fitch or in the gayest bars. As we enter the 21st Century, you could see him almost everywhere, living and breathing and of course, shopping.

The metrosexual man slowly becomes the most promising consumer market of the decade. Wearing Davidoff ‘Cool Water’ perfume, Louis Vuitton Jacket, Lacoste Polo Shirt,  Ray Ban Shades, a pair of Giordano Khaki Pants ,brown boots and Calvin Klein underwear, it just proves that male narcissism is here to stay and we’d have to get used to it. He is a collector of the newest releases sold to him by advertisements. We consider a metrosexual man to be someone who is very concerned about his grooming and appearance spending a significant amount of time and money on shopping.

Although, not all metrosexual men can afford such brands, some still consider themselves to be metrosexual because of the influence they have gotten from magazines that inspire them to be groomed and fashionable at the prices they can afford. Of all the people I’m friends with, who I have interviewed that have said to be metrosexual, students spend at an average of Php5,000 per month for fashionable items. Unlike those who are working or have a job spend at least Php10,000 or more for branded clothing.

http://fashionfreaks12.blogspot.com/2012/05/top-clothing-brands-for-men.html
With all the grooming that they do almost every day, we sometimes question their lifestyle. We stereotypically associate the lifestyle of a metrosexual to be that of a model where everything is in high maintenance to be in the best shape since we see them as these properly dressed males from head to toe. Others ask if you have to change your lifestyle in order to become a metrosexual. In most cases, you don’t have to.

Of course, being a metrosexual doesn’t mean that you have to be at your best 24/7. Some of the metrosexuals I have interviewed also said that they cannot be groomed to their best every day and that there are days when they just don’t care and would pick the nearest shirt to wear to school or work even though it was a ‘horrible’ gift from someone. Like Jake Norman Cando, a recent graduate, said “I have a lot of off days that I just look like patapon(messy)”. There are still those such as John Paulo Alquizor, a high school student, who “make sure to be in the best shape or looks most of the time”.

So if you think being metrosexual is weird, it’s not. It was made just to be a form of expression of individualism representing those of the male society who are concerned of their looks more than the average male. They’re regular people too, just like us. It’s a small change in society which is part of a bigger change as we move forward into the future. And change is nature.
